A Cool Idea

Henry’s Webiocosm has a cool idea (which I am shamelessly pilfering)! Learn something new about a random organism.

I learned about: Cambarus (Glareocola) brachydactylus a plant that inhabits tributaries of the Cumberland River in Tennessee.

What did you learn about?

  1. hI learned about Hyraxes. I never knew these odd little critters existed. Interesting that they are related to elephants and had ancestors the size of a hippopotamus that were out-competed by bovids 25 million years ago.

Living species have specialized sweat glands and muscles in their feet that act as “suction cups” for traction on rocks and in trees. What can’t sweat glands do? Ain’t evolution great?!

They have very efficient kidneys and excrete large amounts of undissolved calcium carbonate, deposits of which were used as medicine by South African tribes and Europeans. Antacid?

My 6 yo son saw one picture and said it looked like a vampire Guinea Pig. He likes bats and seems to think every group of animals has a “vampire” something. LOL

  2. Cool! Vampire squid (oh FSM, Pharyngula is rubbing off on me), how cool would that be! Hyraxes are interesting critters.
