afarensis Needs You: More on the Blog Idea

I have created a site Transitions: The Evolution of Life. The blogging software is a little different than what Blogger uses, so I am still playing around with it. I do have one post up just as a test. As mentioned in the previous post, the site will be devoted to the evolutionary history of, well, life. The target audience will be junior high (or middle school) and high school students. The purpose is to help counteract the rising tide of creationism/intelligent design in our schools by giving students a place to go for information on evolution. That being the case, I am seeking input, advice and help – especially from teachers and scientists – although any one can contribute. I am looking for age appropriate posts (or links to them), links to interesting and creative sites on the web, interesting learning activities, field trips etc.
Feel free to contact me through the comments section of this blog or by email at:

  1. Aw – you have an elephant shrew on that page. I wonder why they call it an “elephant” shrew:)

  2. Its a good looking setup, and I like the name too. You might be careful about what blogs you link to though since you can’t guarantee their “age-appropriatenes” all the time.

  3. Also keep in mind that there are millions of adults out there whose knowledge of biology is at or even below the high school level. So, the Transitions should also target them.

  4. Henry – Yes, I plan on looking the site over before I link to it. I actually prefer a model where several people can create posts on the site. Anybody who wanted to post to the site could forward it via email to one of the people allowed to post. Haven’t quite worked that out yet.

AOrstan – Thats a good point. I’ll keep that in mind.

  6. The site looks good. There are group blogs that allow several people to post. In fact The Dharma Bums is set up that way so DPR can post his own stuff, and I can post mine. DPR also has a group blog with some other folks that is set up the same way. Do you need info on how to set it up? DPR might be able to help.

  8. Yes, it would be good to be able to crosspost. I’d rather post something both at Snail’s Tales & at Transitions than post it only at Snail’s Tales & send you a link.
