Know Your Primate: Paralouatta varonai

Order: Primates
Family: Pitheciidae
Subfamily: Callicebinae
Tribe: Xenotrichini
Genus: Paralouatta
Species: Paralouatta varonai
Paralouatta varonai is another subfossil species, this time found in Cuba. Specimens include a nearly complete skull, a portion of a mandible, and various post-cranial material.

Based on the above skeletal material P. varonai had a body mass of about nine grams, making it one of the larger platyrrhines, and was semiterrestrial. Although P. varonai displays a number of cranial traits that resemble the Howler monkey, it is more closely related to Antillothrix – another subfossil species – and Callicebus.
