Although I don’t write about it much, I am a fan of the old black and white horror movies. I don’t much care for the modern gorefests. At any rate, I was surprised to see this story on Reuters. Apparently, China has banned horror movies:
Producers have around three weeks to look through their tapes for “horror” and report it to authorities, the General Administration of Press and Publications said in a statement posted on the government Web site.
Offending content included “wronged spirits and violent ghosts, monsters, demons, and other inhuman portrayals, strange and supernatural storytelling for the sole purpose of seeking terror and horror,” the administration said.
The alleged reason for the ban is to protect the mental health of adolescents, although it may have something to do with the Olympics. Regardless of the reason, I think this is pretty heinous, I have been watching these kinds of movies since I was a little boy and I’m perfectly normal.*
*Mrs. afarensis has a different view of how normal I am, but I don’t believe in teaching the controversy, so you will just have to take my word for it. Yup, perfectly normal, move along, nothing to see here, you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here…

Ironic, considering that the rather large Chinese film industry that depends on demon and spirit tropes for the magical realism stories they are so famous for.
I wonder if this means they will be undoing the entire history of “historical” martial arts movies from the 70s and 80s through to the present day, as well?
