The Value of Forensic Anthropology

Although the person mentioned in this article is an archaeologist, this is an excellent example of forensic anthropology in action.

Police initially thought the skeleton might be American Indian remains, a fairly common discovery in Marin. But the fillings in the teeth told them otherwise, and police launched a massive crime scene investigation to sift through the woods in search of bones and clues.
An archaeologist commissioned by the county coroner’s office helped investigators separate the human bones from the numerous bones of deer, dogs and other wildlife that had died in the area.

Turns out such was not the case, the remains belong to a women who committed suicide back in 1988 after a short difficult life. Follow the link above and read the entire piece, it’s quite good.
