Reading Rainbow To End? Say It Ain’t So!

According to Think Progress Reading Rainbow’s last episode is set to air its last episode today. I’m shocked. The reason (from NPR:

The show’s run is ending, Grant explains, because no one – not the station, not PBS, not the Corporation for Public Broadcasting – will put up the several hundred thousand dollars needed to renew the show’s broadcast rights.

Grant says the funding crunch is partially to blame, but the decision to end Reading Rainbow can also be traced to a shift in the philosophy of educational television programming. The change started with the Department of Education under the Bush administration, he explains, which wanted to see a much heavier focus on the basic tools of reading – like phonics and spelling.

Reading Rainbow, of course, was devoted to celebrating the joys and wonders of reading and assumed its target audience already knew how to read. Makes one sad…

Afarensis wipes a tear from his eye and wanders off sadly singing:

Butterfly in the sky
I can go twice as high
Take a look
It’s in a book
A Reading Rainbow

I can go anywhere
Friends to know
And ways to grow
A Reading Rainbow

I can be anything
Take a look
It’s in a book
A Reading Rainbow
A Reading Rainbow

  1. For some reason, all I can think of is the Booktastic Bus from South Park.

  2. I’m 23, and grew up watching that show constantly. One of my favorite kids shows on PBS.
