Can’t remember what it is, but it’s not a shoggoth. For something closer look for an illo of a shambling mound from D&D.
BTW, have you read Elizabeth Bear’s “Shoggoths in Spring”? Hugo award winner for 2009, and available for free from Bear’s site.
Oops, make that “Shoggoths in Bloom”. Bear will have a copy on-line.
